Foster FAQs

    • On average our fosters are only needed for a couple of weeks. However, in the case an adopter is not found in that time frame, you are expected to foster until we find an adopter. It is hard to tell how long that will be but we are very diligent about promoting animals on our social medias and petfinder to find them a great home as soon as we can.

    • If you can only foster for a specific period of time that is okay too. Just be sure to let us know up front so we can make other arrangements when you are no longer able to foster.

    • We have a list of approved Vets that are available for you to bring the foster animal to. Please reach out to an FDR member and we will be able to help coordinate an appointment at one of our Vets.

    • We always want to be sure that our animals receive the care they need. If your foster pet is having an emergency, i.e was hit by car, was in a serious fight with another animal, ingested a foreign object, contact an FDR member immediately and let them know you will be bringing the animal to the closest emergency animal hospital.

    • FDR tries to place animals with fosters that we believe will be a good fit. However, sometimes this will fail and we can make new arrangements for the foster animal. Most of the time just having a conversation with an FDR member, we are able to problem solve and change some things to have the animal better adjust in your home.

    • Yes. If you feel that your foster animal is a good fit for your home, fosters always receive first priority to adopt the animal they are fostering. It is important that you think through the decision, as the first few fosters may be difficult and you may become attached and have a hard time letting them go. Just remember your role as a foster is invaluable and you have the opportunity to help dozens of animals.

    • No. You do not have to use a dog crate if you do not feel it is necessary for the animal you are fostering. Your foster dog may not need to be in a crate but please take time and really get to know your dog/learn his/her behavior.

    • If you want to foster but are in need of a crate, we may be able to provide you with one.

    • As FDR is continuing to grow we are asking that fosters provide the supplies for their foster animals at this time. If this is an issue but you would still like to foster please have that conversation with an FDR member.

    • FDR strives to place foster pets in homes that we believe they will succeed in. We make sure any animal that is going into a home with other animals has been tested and is okay with those other animals. With that being said it may take a little while for everyone in the home to become comfortable with one another. These things take time and patience. It is also important to do proper introductions when bringing a new animal into the home. If you need help with this an FDR would be more than happy to facilitate.
